With 200 new features, essential core modules, and mobile-ready design, Drupal 8 is all set to take the arena of CMSs by storm. Moreover, with as much as 34 Drupal 7 modules being a part of the new version’s core, the latter offers better core functionalities. If you are considering migrating your Drupal 6 or 7 Website to the new version, then you must know about the following migration steps:
1. Prepare The Source Site:- Migration from Drupal v6/v7 to Drupal v8 is performed by migrating the content of the source site (ie website running on version 6 or 7) to that of the Drupal v8 site. For this you must first prepare the source site. This involves updating the version of the source site to that of the latest version. That is, if your website is running on version 6.33 and the current version is 6.38, then you must update it to the current version before proceeding. Moreover, it is advisable that the migration is not performed on a live site, and thus, create a back-up of your source site.
2. Prepare The Destination site:- Your destination or target site is the Drupal 8 site. The Migrate Drupal module must be enabled on the target site. Additionally, you must enable those modules which are present on your source site and for which you want configuration and content migration on your destination site. That is, if your source site has the functionality of the blog module and you want the same module and its content on the target site, then you must enable the blog module on the destination site. However, it is important to note that you must not configure your target site until the upgrade process is complete.
3. Upgrade Using The Migration User Interface:- Now, with the Drupal Migration User Interface, you can execute your source website’s upgradation to version 8. By going on to the /upgrade page, you can continue to configure your migration source by entering database credentials and paths of your v6 or v7 site’s files.
4. Review And Perform Upgrade:- You can review the list of modules on the source site and the existing and missing modules on the destination site with the review database. Furthermore, with the perform upgrade action, the configuration of the target site’s modules and content migration will take place.
Therefore, with the above steps, you can successfully upgrade your website running on an older Drupal version to the new Drupal v8.
